Hatchery

An egg. That is how our production process begins. In the hatchery the egg will hatch in about three weeks. Lagerwey hatchery in Lunteren is one of the companies where this happens. After the breeding company has delivered the eggs, they are placed on trays in the incubators. An incubator can accommodate around 57,000 eggs. Lagerwey has 110 incubators, which means there is room for more than six million eggs.

It will be clear after 18 days whether the eggs are fertilised or not. A fully-automatic scanner is used to see whether the egg contains an embryo. The fertilised eggs are transferred to the hatching machine. The eggs hatch after three days. Thousands of chicks appear within a period of approximately 24 hours.
